This Sunday the Church brings to a close the Christmas season with the celebration of the Solemnity of the Baptism of Our Lord. Last Sunday we celebrated the feast of the Epiphany, the manifestation of Our Lord as Light of the Nation. This feast of the Baptism can be regarded as the “Second” Epiphany. Our Lord received the Baptism He did not need, and in doing so, manifested or revealed to us the sanctification of water as a means of salvation. Also, the Biblical accounts, on this occasion, the One God appeared in three persons, The Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit. Not surprisingly, in the Eastern Church this feast is called Theophany (manifestation of God).
Our Lord, with His baptism, conferred upon the water the power of the true Baptism which would remove all the sins of the world. As the Baptist put it, pointing to Christ: “Behold the Lamb of God, behold Him Who takes away the sin of the world.”
May we lead all to the water of life…..
Happy New Year,
